Glasgow goes barking mad for student art

The Scotties in the City trail in and around Glasgow is in support of national cancer charity Maggie's - which has saw New College Lanarkshire students join in on the fun.

The sculptures, each weighing 50kg, have been individually designed by artists and placed at iconic locations including the Riverside Museum, Science Centre, Kibble Palace, Milngavie, Giffnock and Paisley Abbey.

In addition to the 40 large Scotties, 52 smaller versions created by schools, nurseries and community groups can be viewed in Glasgow libraries and Buchanan Galleries.

Students on the Connect to the Arts course in NCL's Supported Learning Department were inspired with the Van Gogh painting ‘Starry Starry Night’. They used various painting techniques and a step by step method.

Heather Clarke, NCL Art Lecturer, got involved with the initiative as a way to honour her mum's memory while giving her students a real-world platform for their work.

"Losing my mum made me think about what I could actually do," said Heather. "I wanted something that meant something and I knew my students were capable of creating work that could genuinely move people. This felt like the right way to bring both of those things together."

The trail will conclude in September with an auction of the giant Scottie dogs to raise funds for Maggie’s centres across Scotland.
