Students takes Scots Law into their own hands
Former Lord Advocate Frank Mulholland launched a landmark legal guide produced by HND Legal Services students at New College Lanarkshire, at a ceremony at the College's Coatbridge Campus.
A Guide to Scots Law - updated for the first time in a decade and translated into 13 languages - was created in partnership with the Scottish Government, Police Scotland, Crimestoppers and the Scottish Refugee Council.
Lord Mulholland, who worked with NCL law students on the original guide, said he was proud of what the students had delivered. "I am proud of them for their work to help the disadvantaged, the people who need help in their lives at a time when they need it most."
For HND Legal Services student Tamara Sanchez Fernandez, the project was personal. Having moved to Scotland from Spain 15 years ago, she understands first-hand the value of a resource like this. "When you come to a country, the last thing you do is check the laws — but it's great to have a booklet like this. Not every country is the same. It was a challenge, but I loved it."
Carolyn Conlin, Academic Leader for Law, Tourism and Languages, said: "Our students have put an enormous amount of time and effort into producing such an important guide. They can rightly be very proud of what they have delivered."
Principal Professor Christopher Moore added: "The lecturers and students who have worked on this have produced a superb introduction to Scots law - a relevant resource that will really support everyone across our communities."
New College Lanarkshire is also set to launch a new BA Law degree at its Motherwell Campus, delivered in partnership with the University of the West of Scotland. Applications open soon for the September 2026 intake.
